DIVE SITES

A Paradise for Divers

One of the top reasons why divers from all over the world decide to visit Roatan again and again is because of its wide variety of dive sites. Walls, Sand patches, Swim-Throughs, Caves, Wrecks and Drifts dives are found all around our 36-mile-long island. Being formed by the coalition of tectonic plates, the island is surrounded by a steep wall of reef that starts to drop off as shallow as 20 ft deep in some areas.

Fortunately, we don’t have to go too far to find some of the best dive spots on the island. Within 10 minutes of our dive center, we find over 40 buoys -starting between 20ft and 50ft deep- that mark the different dive sites and snorkel sites. These buoys have been placed and maintained by the Roatan Marine Park in their efforts to conserve the reef, forbidding the use of anchors and its subsequent coral damage.

Hole in the Wall

One of Roatan’s most iconic dive sites, Hole in the Wall happens as a result of an interruption of the otherwise constant wall that surrounds our island. Legend has it, no one has ever reached the bottom of the hole. Due to centuries of fresh water flowing from the island into the reef, we find endless canyons, swim-throughs and even a cave, which make this an excellent dive to test your buoyancy skills. Advanced certification is a must to completely experience this dive site.

Blue Channel

Also famous for being an amazing snorkeling site, Blue Channels lives up to its name. We usually like to start this dive from the wall and work our way towards the shore by going through a beautiful canyon where we find a majestic short circuit of swim-throughs. It’s not uncommon to see eagle rays and green moray eels while working our way out of the channel and into the lagoon where all the critters wait for us; upside down jellies, hermit crabs, flounders and more, make this area a great spot for macro photography.

Chief’s Quarters

Chief’s Quarters is our very own “House Reed”. A quick five-minute boat ride from our dock, it is definitely one of our favorites. A shallow 20 ft. descent into a clear sand patch then turns into a gradual descent down to 45-50 ft. Within fifteen minutes we can reach the wall, where it drops off down to 90+ ft. We often see all kinds of species, big and small. This site is excellent for all levels of divers, and we often conduct Night dives here, as well.

West End Wall

Located at the southwestern point of the island, we drop in just on the top edge of the wall at 20 ft. The wall continues to drop down but we stay usually within the 60 ft. max depth range. We like to do this as a Drift dive as a gentle current may be present to help us along. At 30 ft. the top of the reef turns into a shallow plateau known as “The Point”. The currents here feed many large schools of fish as well as healthy, soft corals.

Overheat Reef

Located off Sandy Bay, this site is a 15-20 minute boat ride from our dock. The top of the reef here is 15-20 ft., and we can either immediately drop down the wall or take a more gradual descent through variating topography. We like to do this site as a Drift dive as well, exploring sand patches, swim-through and the wall. We often find turtles resting in the corals and eels hiding under hidden ledges. Overheat Reef is suitable for all levels of divers.

Mandy’s Eel Garden

10 minutes from our dock and right off of beautiful West Bay Beach, this site is sure to please everyone. Descend first into a stunning white sand patch at 20+ ft. To the south west, you’ll pass over the coral reef and find yourself on a wall with many overhangs and beautiful corals. On a deeper sand patch at 75 ft. we can see the famed Garden Eels waving up at us. To the north east, the coral reef gradually slopes down to a sand patch at 50 ft. and more Garden Eels. We also often see stingrays and Hogfish. Mandy’s Eel Garden is suitable for all levels of divers.
